A Saturday soccer deluge

A Saturday soccer deluge

Hi readers:

Just checking in with a little quick soccer and scheduling talk.

We had a great trip down to Orlando thanks to Phil and Bobbi Bees of The Regiment, who were fantastic hosts, but the trip back on Friday was a bit harrowing with all the tropical downpours and Floridiots slamming into each other on Interstates 4 and 95. Plus once we got home we had a chance to hang out with an old Army buddy who was visiting from out of town, so there wasn’t a chance to post my usual second-day game wrap.

Today’s actually a pretty busy soccer day… on television. ESPN has the U-20 World Cup Final between France and Uruguay at 11:45. We’ve got a USA Gold Cup match this afternoon at 3:30 against Cuba from Rio Tinto Stadium (FOX), and the Charleston chapter of the American Outlaws will be meeting at 3 p.m. at Madra Rua Park Circle in North Charleston for a watch party. The USA men are red hot in this off-year Gold Cup competition, and we’ve had good crowds at Madra Rua, so plan accordingly. Plus there’s a full slate of MLS matches, concluding with the NBC Sports Network’s Game of the Week at 11 p.m., when Portland hosts the LA Galaxy.

Also, John Ace tells me that Liverpool plays its first preseason match of this summer today, and he’ll probably have something on that local gathering.

Then there’s the Charleston Battery’s showdown in Plant City, when our local team visits VSI Tampa Bay FC for the first time. That kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on USL PRO’s UNation live stream, which you can watch from home, or join The Regiment at Molly Darcy’s for a watch party.

As for me, I have some stuff to do before I’ll be able to sit down to write, but I’ll have a rushed Orlando game wrap / Tampa game preview up as soon as possible.

Sorry for the delays, etc. Stay dry out there.
