Battery all-time USOC results

Battery all-time USOC results

So you’ve probably heard that the Charleston Battery is a “good Cup team.” But what does that really mean?

To get a better idea, I’ve compiled every result from every U.S. Open Cup match played by the Charleston Battery in club history. And the numbers tell some interesting stories.

Charleston has won more than two-thirds of its Cup matches, and has a combined record of 19-2 against teams that aren’t in Major League Soccer. But it hasn’t exactly sucked against teams from the top level of American soccer, either. Charleston is a third-tier team with a .450 tournament winning percentage against MLS teams — and a remarkable .533 winning percentage against MLS teams that visit Blackbaud Stadium. The majority of Charleston’s Open Cup matches have been played against MLS clubs, and three MLS teams — Houston Dynamo, the New York Metrostars/Red Bulls and D.C. United — are currently tied for the distinction of the Battery’s most frequent opponent (three times each).

But maybe the most eye-catching stat you’ll notice is just how often the Battery host Cup matches. Thirty-one of their Cup appearances — a whopping 72 percent — have been played at Blackbaud, where the Battery have enjoyed a .742 winning percentage.

For those of you with a serious geek Jones, here’s the link to the spreadsheet.
