Charleston Battery Captain Colin Falvey joined the two Vancouver Whitecaps players on loan to Charleston in the starting lineup today for the Whitecaps Reserves in Sandy, Utah. All three players are expected to return to the Lowcountry tonight.
Battery President Andrew Bell said the match should give the Whitecaps technical staff a chance to take a good look at Emmanuel Adjetey and Bryce Alderson to gauge their progress after two months of playing and training in Charleston.
“They needed a central defender, too, and we were more than happy to oblige for this one reserve game,” Bell said. “It should be a good experience for all three players.”
Charleston and Vancouver have never signed a formal (or as Bell puts it, “full”) affiliation agreement like multiple other MLS/USL PRO clubs, but the Whitecaps have sent three players to to Charleston on loan in 2013.
Falvey is the first Battery player to go on trial with Vancouver this season. As trials go, this one looks more like a short-term loan, but Falvey has proven himself repeatedly against MLS competition this season, and will definitely be on the lookout for offseason opportunities to move up to North America’s senior league.
Vancover announced the arrangement this morning in their website preview of this afternoon’s Reserve match against the Real Salt Like Reserves. In the 63rd minute, the Whitecaps Reserves led the RSL Reserves 2-1. Follow the action on Twitter via @WhitecapsMatch.
