Monday soccer reset

Bracket busted? Of course it is. Seriously: Florida Gulf Coast International? Who knew that was even a school?

It’s OK. Soccer forgives you. Welcome back…

Remember Ryan Richter? Well, he’s gone to Toronto, according to the TFC website.

FC Phoenix broke the protective seal on its USL PRO packaging Saturday night with a 0-2 loss to the LA Blues in the opening match of the 2013 regular season. The Blues host both of this year’s expansion clubs to start their season, facing VSI Tampa Bay FC (the alphabet soup team) on April 2. Even weirder, both of those matches take place before any of the other returning clubs play their first regular season game of the year (that would be Pittsburgh at Richmond on April 6).

All told, there will be eight regular-season USL PRO matches in the books before the Charleston Battery go on the road to Richmond for their first game that counts on April 13th, and the LA Blues will have played four of them (the win over Phoenix, the game against Tampa, a matchup with the L.A. Galaxy Reserves on the 7th, followed by Orlando City on the 10th).

In World Cup qualifying, the U.S. picked up its first win in the Hex by defeating Costa Rica in a game that looked like it was being played inside a snow globe. And now Costa Rica wants a do-over.

Battery trialist and former College of Charleston star Ralph Lundy III is out of surgery and on the rehab road.

Regiment President Mikey Buytas has been hanging around the top of the Regiment League in MLS Fantasy Soccer Manager since play began, and he finally climbed into second place last night. Buytas’ Holy City Hooligan team hung 67 points on the league this week thanks to making Mike Magee his captain. The win was tops in the league for this round, just ahead of Ben Smith’s 65. But it still wasn’t enough to catch Xarktopia LLC (yes, that’s me), which scored 58 points to maintain its stranglehold on the top spot with a combined 167 points, seven ahead of Buytas.  Melissa Grooms scored 52, and now trails Buytas by 1 point.

There’s no question what constitutes this week’s must-see match:  The Yanks at El Tri on Tuesday, March 26., 10:30 our time, ESPN. Univision, be there, aloha.

The next USL PRO match of 2013 will be the first meeting of the two expansion clubs when VSI Tampa travels to Sun Devil Stadium to play the FC Phoenix Wolves on Saturday. It’s supposed to be live-streamed, so if you’re curious to see what these new guys look like, you can get the full Monty in just one match.

The Battery’s unusually active preseason is almost complete, with the team traveling up to Conway for a rematch with Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday at 5 p.m., followed by a home match (exhibition friendly, no ticket required) against the Carolina Railhawks of NASL at Blackbaud stadium at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The CCU Chanticleers gave the Battery a tough match in the first leg of their friendly series, and the Battery took a 2-1 win on the Railhawks’ home turf on March 14. Not saying that this necessarily bugged the Railhawks, but their front office Tweeted a lot about the upcoming match, and then never got around to mentioning the outcome…
