Tuesday stuff & nonsense

Tuesday stuff & nonsense

A quick look behind the scenes at what we’ve been up to here since we last checked in on Saturday…

Watching Netflix: Because every now and then you realize that you’re just plain watching too much soccer.

Riding bikes: Because it was a nice day yesterday.

Meeting with reporters: I’ve pulled the want-ad for new writers because I got enough replies (for the time being), but now I need to meet in person with everyone who has applied and get them appropriate assignments.

Reaching out on new stories: I’m either setting up or conducting interviews for seven different feature articles that you’ll see here over the next month or so. And that’s not to mention the player profiles series, which will return soon.

Site upgrades: Because sometimes you have to take off the journalist’s hat and put on the SysAdmin hat and get to work on new features, punch lists and bug fixes.

Graphic design: My wife, graphic design artist Janet Edens Conover, has been working on images for T-shirts and promotional materials for the past 24 hours.

Travel planning: Looks like we may be joining the caravan to Charlotte next Tuesday for the Battery’s road game against the Eagles.

Business planning: What’s a good deal? What are things worth? How do you calculate shipping? What’s a fair unit cost? What’s the best way to deliver real value to specific types of sponsors? What’s your fallback plan? And so on.

Regiment MLS Fantasy Soccer Manager league update: Casey Grooms broke out of his slump with a 75 point score to win the week and take possession of 9th place. Mikey Buytas retained the top spot with a round score of 71, followed by Casey’s wife, Melissa Grooms, whose 64 points kept her in 4th place while gaining ground on the next three teams above her in the table.

Remember: This is one of those crazy MLS weeks with six games tomorrow, seven games on Saturday, and two games on Sunday. Plus there are two EPL matches this afternoon, including Man City v. West Brom on basic cable at 2:45, the Chelsea-Tottenham throw-down Wednesday at 2:45, the FA Cup final between Man City and Wigan on Saturday, and then seven EPL matches on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in USL PRO: There’s a match tonight between the LA Blues and the Galaxy Reserves, a Thursday game between the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and the visiting Phoenix FC Wolves, and then Friday matches between Antigua Barracuda FC and Harrisburg, followed by Rochester at Wilmington. All matches are available live on UNation.

Yes, Wilmington: Once again, the Charleston Battery welcome a traveling opponent playing on 24 hours rest. The Battery kick off their first leg of The Southern Derby Saturday against the visiting Hammerheads, then travel to Charlotte for the second round of the fan-cup competition a week from today (Tuesday, May 17). Check The Regiment Facebook page for details on plans for both matches.

suarez shirtShirt of the Day: It’s no Deuce Face, but I dig this one:

Say this one out loud: Why do the French only eat one egg at a time? Answer: Because it’s an oeuf.

UPDATE– FALVEY AND PATERSON MAKE THE USL PRO TEAM OF THE WEEK: Looks like I checked the USL website a bit too early this morning. Two of the Battery’s top veterans got some well-deserved league love this morning. Congrats to Colin Falvey and Nicki Paterson…

Charleston’s Colin Falvey completed the defensive quartet after putting in a pair of strong performances as the Battery took victories on the road against Harrisburg and Dayton. Battery Midfielder Nicki Paterson was also named after scoring a pair of goals, both of which proved to be game-winners, in the two victories.
